I Thought I Knew the Kind of Man I Married

Please, I need to get this off my chest because it has been bothering me so much. My husband and two of his friends just returned from Nigeria, and last week, I overheard a conversation between them that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about. One of his friends said, “Omo, bros, that girl said she’s pregnant, and I don’t know what to do. I don’t want my wife to find out.” My husband replied, “Omo, why are you scared? There’s no problem. If you don’t want the child, just send the girl ₦3 million, block her everywhere, and change your social media accounts. After all, you’ve always been low-key, and your wife will never find out.” Honestly, I was shocked when I heard this. What makes me even more uncomfortable is that none of my husband’s friends has any social media presence. There is literally no trace of them online. Another thing that keeps coming back to my mind is that last year, when my husband returned from Nigeria, he changed his WhatsApp number and his regular call number. When I asked him why, he told me he had given some people in Nigeria his number and didn’t want them to have access to him anymore.

At the time, I didn’t think much of it, but after overhearing that conversation, I’m beginning to connect things in my head, and honestly, it’s frightening me. The confusing part is that my husband seems like the cleanest, gentlest man ever. We have been married for six years, we have two beautiful children, and I have never had any trace or reason to suspect him of infidelity. He has never given me any obvious reason to doubt him, which is why this whole situation is messing with my head. Why would a man who has nothing to hide be so comfortable teaching his friend how to conceal something like this from his wife? Is it possible for a man to be this supportive of his friend’s secrets without having similar secrets of his own? And why would my husband need to change both his WhatsApp and call numbers after returning from Nigeria? I honestly hope I’m overthinking everything because I don’t even know how to process what I heard. Six years of marriage, two children, and I have always believed I knew the kind of man I married.
