I started dating this girl last December, and things seemed fine at first. While I didn’t fully trust her, I was cautiously optimistic. I’ve been single since 2023, focusing on getting my finances in order before getting serious with anyone. Then I met this girl at a mall last December. We clicked, and after chatting for a while, I told her how I felt and she agreed to give us a chance. Money isn’t an issue for me, so I knew I could take good care of her. However, my ex was close to perfect. She showered me with gifts, love, and attention. If I bought her a N600k hair, she’d reciprocate with a N100k watch or something. I was used to a woman who also spent on me, but she was toxic, so I ended things before she drove me crazy. Back to the new girl, I met her in December and her birthday was on February 7th. I didn’t spend much on her that day because I had plans for Valentine’s Day. I gave her N150k, a flower and a cake. On Valentine’s Day, I took her to Lagos for a vacation, we live in Benin. We went shopping and all I got in return was s€x, which I was okay with.
But since we started dating, she’s never given me a gift, not even N1,000. Around my birthday last month, while she was at my place, I overheard her on a call with her friend, saying she didn’t have money to get me a gift. I sent her N500k a few days before my birthday, hoping she’d get me something. On my birthday, she posted a long caption with my picture and sent a birthday message. When she came over, I was expecting a gift, but she came empty handed. My heart sank. I didn’t say anything and I cancelled the club party I was supposed to go to because I was so sad and angry. At night she offered s€x again, but I refused, saying I wasn’t in the mood. The next morning, an unknown number called saying someone had a package for me. I was excited, thinking it was from my girlfriend. The delivery guy came and I signed for it. Then I got a message from the same unknown number saying happy birthday my favourite ex. I hope you like the little gift I could afford. I still love you and I miss you.
It was a N175k Cartier watch from my ex. I was surprised, even though it wasn’t a real Cartier. My girlfriend came in and saw my excitement. When I told her it was from my ex, she told me to return the gift, saying I didn’t respect her. I was furious. I asked if she gifted me anything and she said she didn’t have money. I asked about the N500k I gave her and she said she used it for something important to her. I felt really sad, like I wasn’t important enough. I almost lost it, but I controlled myself. I asked her to leave and I’ve blocked her everywhere since then. I want to know if I did the right thing because I still love her but I’m also angry. Please advise me. And just a quick notice, she’s working and I think her salary is about N90k monthly or so.
