I Have Lost My $4,500 to Love… I Feel So Stoppid

I’m in so much pain as I’m typing this. I met this guy, Stephen, in 2018, and we dated for a year. The relationship ended because he refused to pay back the N500k I borrowed him when I needed the money to get an apartment. Instead, he took me to his friend’s house, and when that friend tried to sleep with me and proposed to pay me N100k, Stephen got mad and took me to his own apartment on the island, where he just forgot me. I’d call, and he wouldn’t pick up—he rarely even came to the house. No money, no love. I got fed up and begged my friend to accommodate me. She accepted, and I moved out, blocking him everywhere. He eventually paid me the next year and started calling me, but it was already too late. I had moved on, and I told him he didn’t treat me right. He kept begging me to unblock him, which I later did, and we basically just became friends. He said he was going through a rough time, that his business was crumbling, and life was hitting him hard. I felt bad for leaving, but it was too late—I was already in another relationship in 2020. That relationship eventually ended after three years.

Fast forward to August 2023, Stephen reached out to me again on his birthday. I was single at that point, so we went on a date and talked about us. I decided to give him another chance, which turned out to be the biggest mistake of my life. The next month, he and his friend were k!dnapped for about four days. They lost all their savings, his car, and other valuables. It was like starting afresh. I supported him in the little way I could. I gave him N500k to add to what he had to get a new phone. Then, last year, he borrowed $4,500 from me to invest in a real estate business with his friends. He promised to refund me in dollars as soon as they sold the property, saying the deal would be completed in six months. Fast forward to December last year—he started acting up and being nonchalant about the relationship. I made it clear that we couldn’t work, and I ended the relationship. I was patiently waiting for February to get my $4,500, which was the due date for the investment. February came, and he said March 28th. On March 26th, he texted me asking if I was interested in hanging out with him,

which I declined. I was just waiting for my money. The 28th came, and he didn’t call or text. I started calling him around 8 PM that Friday, but he didn’t pick up or write back. The next morning, he texted me saying he had traveled and lost his mother—imagine wishing your mother dead just to avoid paying back borrowed money. I kept calling all his numbers. He finally asked me to send my account details and only sent 2 million naira from the $4,500, then blocked me. I reached out to one of his friends—the one I once lived with—and he told me that Stephen did the same thing to him. He only got his money back because he went to his house unannounced and seized his land documents. But I can’t go to his house because I need access to get through the estate gate. I asked a friend to reach out to him, and he insulted her. I went to his Instagram page and reached out to a friend who had commented on his post. Immediately, he put his page on private. He said I should do my worst—that he’s ready. The balance at the moment is 5.2 million naira because he only sent 2 million. Since he doesn’t want to pay in dollars, he should in dollars.
