There is this guy; he is actually friends with my brother. We have been talking since 2020—that’s about five years now. When we started conversing, I got to know he is a G guy and a chain smoker, which I told him were the reasons we couldn’t be together. Sometimes, we have misunderstandings during conversations, and we don’t talk for months. Not too recently, we started talking again after being out of contact for almost a year. These are a few things he mentioned during some of our conversations:
He sees himself retiring in five years but doesn’t work in a government or private setting. He tried to hide what caused his breakup with his ex-girlfriend by starting an argument. Some of his friends are womanizers, but he insists he isn’t. He always says he hasn’t been in a relationship since breaking up with his ex, even during our on-and-off phase. There was a time he wanted to borrow money from me. I truly didn’t have it at that moment. However, there was a previous time we were talking, and he mentioned he was broke.
I sent him the little I had. Later, when he asked again and I couldn’t help, he said, “Oh, it’s because you’re the one being asked; my time will also come.” I was like, what? Really? At the time, I was a student and promised to send him money when I got what I was expecting. I even considered asking my brothers for help but didn’t because I was caught up with schoolwork and exams. During my final exams, I told him I was studying. Up till now, he hasn’t bothered to ask how it went or how I did after the results were released. He is always talking about me coming to visit him and us going out together.
I told him I can’t because if it happens, he will bring up conversations about us being together. What do you guys think? Should I just remain friends with him? Should I ask if he has a girlfriend? Because what is this level of situationship? He always wants to talk to me every day and wants to see me, but I don’t know how to tell him I don’t want another phase of what happened years back. Is he lying to me? How can I ask him if he has a girlfriend? Obviously, we can’t be together, so what’s the point of all this back-and-forth? I’ve spoken to his brother twice over the phone and a few of his friends, but… I don’t know.
