I recently noticed my boyfriend runs away when he’s broke. We came from different backgrounds: he’s dirt poor to a self-made tech bro, while I am daddy’s girl to a self-made virtual assistant. To his credit, he’s a good and attentive guy, and I thought he liked me. I’ve been his financial aid, teaching him to save, and budget, and also teaching him how to be a man. He’s a quiet pushover even with his friends. I admit sometimes I’m hard on him, but my dad taught me to be tough. I rarely bill him. If I buy something, I just tell him he’s owing me and to pay whenever. If I buy a wig, I ask him to pay half when he can because I really need him to have enough money to start a business.
Last month, he suddenly ghosted me for about a week. I think it was because I asked for Easter gifts and he didn’t have money. He has this notion that whenever I ask for something, he has to go above and beyond, and I have communicated several times that it’s not so. I have also explained to him my triggers and boundaries, and he purposefully crosses them. Anyway, he came back and has been begging for weeks now. I have decided I’ll take him back. I’m leaving the country next month, but I won’t tell him. Let’s see how he likes it when someone pulls the rug out from under him.
