How I Chopped Breakfast

I met this guy at a lounge in Ikeja in August last year. Let’s call him Tade. I was there with my friend for a birthday celebration when he walked up to me, looking quite handsome. To be honest, I liked what I saw. He said, “Oh, I know you.” I replied, “Who?” and he insisted, “Yes, I know you.” I smiled, and he introduced himself as Tade. I told him my name too. The next day, I traveled to Warri for a colleague’s wedding, and Tade was on the phone with me throughout the road trip. We quickly moved from audio to video calls, and soon we were talking every minute. When I got back from Warri, we met again at the same lounge, and after a few dates, we became intimate. Before long, we were seeing each other almost every day. Sometimes, I would go to work from his house because it was closer to my office. He would sometimes drop me off and pick me up. He was very supportive and always found solutions to almost everything I complained about (except money). Of course, I never disturbed him for money because I’m okay on my own. Fast forward to his birthday: we went out and stayed out late, then crashed at his place. Early the next morning, someone started knocking at his door. He refused to open it and kept begging me, saying he would explain everything to me.

From his conversation with the girl on the phone (she was calling at the same time), I gathered that he had told her to leave him alone. To be honest, I felt bad for her and my attitude towards him changed. When I asked him what had happened between them, he told me that she never appreciated what he did for her, even when he sent her money. I asked if he was still seeing her, and he repeatedly denied it.

Last Thursday, he went out and was video calling me and singing for me, as usual. Around 1 AM, he called to say he had gotten home and would call me back after his shower. I needed to remind him of something, so I called him, but he declined the call and switched off his phone. I was worried and couldn’t sleep all night. At 6 AM, I went to his house and noticed his car wasn’t there. The gateman told me he hadn’t come home since the previous day. I was so upset. Knowing he usually joined an online 7 AM prayer, I waited and called him again, but he declined the call. After the prayer, I called him again, but he didn’t pick up until a few minutes to 9 AM when he picked and told me he was in a meeting. I was so angry that I ended the call and didn’t talk to him.

He kept on calling and begging until Saturday. On Saturday, he called and begged me to forgive him, so I went to see him. He was so drunk that I couldn’t leave him alone, so I stayed. His phone rang, but he switched it off until the next day. While I was still sleeping, there was a knock on the door, and it was that girl again. He begged me not to get angry and went outside to meet her, but she tried to force her way inside. He dragged her outside, and I heard them murmuring. Eventually, the girl forced her way inside to meet me. I was already packing my things to leave, and she told me that she and Tade had been dating for almost two years.

She said he had slept at her house from Thursday to Friday morning and left without telling her. I told her not to worry, that I would leave. She told me a lot, and I was glad to hear it. I packed my things and got into my car. Tade had the nerve to tell me not to go, but I told him I had somewhere to be on Sunday morning. After I left, I kept imagining the whole scenario and called him to explain why he had lied to me. He didn’t pick up my call all day. On Monday morning, he sent me a text saying he was unsure how to handle our situation and hoped I understood. Na so I chop breakfast o.
