Teaching needs to be one of the highest-paid professions—seriously. As a fresh graduate, I decided to work for a while before heading off to NYSC. Let me tell you, I think I have met the most uncouth and undisciplined kids in my life. The way they treat teachers is outright disrespectful. But do I blame them entirely? No. The system is broken. God, please bless all teachers. Imagine reading novels, preparing lesson plans, and pouring your energy into teaching students who are not ready to learn. The citadels of learning have become chaotic.
These kids don’t know a thing, yet they will argue with full confidence. All they seem to focus on are nefarious activities and illicit acts. One of them even had the audacity to tap my behind! Hmmm, so many experiences, and the management’s response? “You will get used to it.” What?! My B.A. in English didn’t prepare me for this nonsense. Teachers deserve respect. Teachers deserve better pay, not measly amounts. Teachers deserve everything. For those of us doing this work, may God strengthen us.
