I’m texting this with tears in my eyes. On October 4th, I went to visit my boyfriend at an apartment on the mainland. Everything was going smoothly until 3 a.m. in the middle of the night. My boyfriend was fast asleep, but I was still awake when I heard a loud noise. A man barged in, asking, “Where is your working phone? Your working laptop?” I was scared. That was wrong. My boyfriend doesn’t do yahoo or any illegal stuff; I’m very sure of that.
They slapped him and collected his phone. They didn’t even allow us to make any calls. I asked why they were beating him, and that was when I received a big slap on my ear. They collected both our phones without allowing us to make any calls. We were not the only ones they took, and we were taken to Ikoyi police station (SPFU). We were about twenty-something people.
I slept inside the cell for two days without being able to reach anyone. They beat my boyfriend and took N500k from me. We were bailed on the second day, but they didn’t release our phones. They asked us to come for them the next day because they wanted to check them after bailing us. They collected our passwords the night we were brought in, so they had access to our phones. The man didn’t want to release our phones.
It was only after we brought a soldier the next day that he gave them back. The IPO said, “He (my boyfriend) isn’t among the people practicing fraud,” yet they collected N500k from us. 😭😭 They initially told us to bring N2 million, but after pleading, the IPO collected N500k for no offense. The N500k I paid was the money I had been saving. Now, all my savings are gone. I just want to know why we were arrested because they didn’t find anything with us.
