My Friend Wants Us to Keep a Mutual Enemy

I’m a naturally quiet and reserved person, and I keep my circle of friends small. There’s one friend, in particular, with whom I share a very tight bond. We’re so close that if I spot something she might like, I buy it for her without thinking twice. I always take her side when she’s quarreling with someone, even without knowing what happened. Her family situation is a bit complex—her father has two wives, and the families don’t get along. But my family has always been friends with hers. Recently, her half sister, who seems kind and decent, came to my hometown to prepare for nursing school and was sent to stay with us.

My friend doesn’t want me to talk to her stepsister because of the tension between their families. But I can’t ignore someone who hasn’t wronged me, and I’ve tried to explain that to my friend. Now she’s upset, accusing me of siding with the “enemy,” which I genuinely don’t understand. The situation is weighing on me because I don’t want to lose my friend. I do have a bit of a friendship with this girl, but my friend feels betrayed. Did I cross a line, or am I just caught in the middle of something bigger than me?
