My 17-year-old sister, who’s in her second year of university, texted me tonight saying she wanted to talk. She shared that there’s a guy she likes who also likes her and has been asking her out. She initially told him she wasn’t interested because he lived close to our family house. Although she’s away at school, she comes home on weekends. I live and work in another state. I’m eight years older than her, and I’ve always tried to be open and supportive, much like our late brother was with me. He showered me with so much love that I’ve always wanted to live up to his example.
Now, I’m trying to be that same supportive and reasonable older sister to her, but I’m struggling. It really hurts to think about her wanting to have a boyfriend, especially now that the guy has relocated to a different area. I’m at a loss for words because I don’t want to scare her off from confiding in me, but I also know she might still do what she wants in the end. Honestly, I’m not even sure if I need advice right now—I just don’t know how to handle this. But yes, the advice can come in… thanks in advance.
